HELPING YOUR YOUNG CHILD GET OFF TO A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR
Posted: August 6, 2024
Getting children off to a great school year involves several key strategies. Here are some effective ways parents can support their kids:
- Talk and Engage: Arrange a time to meet your child’s teacher and principal prior to the first day of school. If possible, take your child with you. Schools are typically very open in assisting your child to familiarize themselves with the school and to feel safe. In healthcare, we frequently refer to this as a
“warm handoff”. But make sure you prearrange your appointment. School administrators and teachers are very busy the few days prior to the first day of school. There is significant research that suggests the best predictor of a child’s success at school is the parent-teacher relationship.
- Sleep Schedule: Transition to a consistent sleep schedule before school starts. Adequate rest is essential for focus and learning.
- Healthy Meals: Find out about your school’s meal program and make decisions regarding your child’s participation. Plan nutritious lunches and snacks (Put affirming pictures or notes in your child’s lunch or snack bag.) See if your child is allowed to have a water bottle with them. Most schools no longer have water fountains but water dispensers. Proper hydration and nutrition support cognitive function and overall well-being.
- Homework Routine: Create an appealing homework space and establish a consistent routine. This helps children stay organized and motivated.
- Activities and Downtime: Balance school activities with downtime. Allow kids to unwind for a little while when they get home from school. Ask your child open-ended questions about what they did at school each day. Allow them to talk and listen. Work to not make judgmental comments about what your child says. Also make sure your child continues to have opportunities to pursue favorite activities and hobbies.
Remember, positive communication and routines across school and home set the foundation for a successful school experience!
